Piratesī Treasure
This is a great pair activity for students to learn about co-ordinates. Students choose a game board each. Then they choose 10 numbers on their game board. In their maths book they write an equation for each of the ten numbers. Eg if one of their numbers was 0 they would write 5 - 0 = (if you are just teaching subtraction you could tell students to only write subtraction equations). Students then have to give their partner a co-ordinate (1,4). The partner looks at his game board and says the number on the co-ordinate (1,4). If this is the answer to one of their equations they get another turn at asking for a co-ordinate. If it isnīt, it is the next players turn. If a player asks for a co-ordinate and this co-ordinate has the piratesī treasure on it (the star) then this player gets an answer for free (the other player has to tell them the co-ordinate of the equation they asked for). Remind students to right down the co-ordinates they have asked so they donīt waste turns in doubling up! My 8 year old students love this game!
