Vocabulary game- 10 countries
This is a vocabulary game that will get the class going and which is popular at all levels. Before the lesson: the teacher will decide how many groups there will be in the class, there should be at least 6 students per group. The teacher will then make copies to match the amount of groups, i.e. 4 groups= 4 copies. Don´t have too many groups, the lesson will be a loud, active and possibly also a messy one and so 3-4 groups is ideal. When the copies are made, they will then be cut into stripes after each category- eg. ´10 countries´ is a category. Put a paperclip to all the copies of the same category and put in a plastic file or a bucket or similar. Lesson: divide the students into groups and tell each group they will have to get a team name, a team sound and a team runner. As they have decided this, the teacher writes the team names on the whiteboard with space below for points. Rules: the teacher will leave the first category which is picked out of the bucket on a table on the front of the classroom (and obviously remove the paperclip and place out the strips of paper). The teacher will then explain that at the word ´go´ the runners will come up to fetch the category to bring back to his or her group. The group will then get busy writing down what is required, for instance ´10 countries´ on a piece of paper. The fastest group to finish makes their team noise and then all the other teams have to quit writing. The fastest team gets 5 points for finishing first and then they get a point for each correct answer. If the answers are not correct then all the groups may try again. The other groups then get to share their answers and get points for whatever their correct answers were. Next round, teacher places out the next category on the table and shout ´go´. The game can go on for as long or as short a time as the teacher feels is adequate. Naturally the winning team in the end is the one with the most points. It is quite popular and gets the students working together, moving about and laughing.
