Lamb to the Slaughter Storylines
Before the students read Roald Dahl’s short story or watch Alfred Hitchcock’s 23-minute film, they are given about a dozen short extracts from the story, and in groups they have to discuss a reason for each passage and what might be happening in the story. (This is based on a technique described in Alan Duff and Alan Maley’s great book, "Literature," published by Oxford.) After the students have discussed in their groups, I recommend "exploding" the groups, i.e. forming new ones and have them summarize all the ideas from their original groups. This gets a lot of discussion and interest in reading the story or watching the film!
