Spelling Celebrities
Here is a fun way for students to practice their pronunciation of the English alphabet. In pairs or groups, students spell the birth names of the famous people on their cards, and their partners have to guess who these people are better known as (Tom Cruise, Eminem, Bill Clinton, Lady Gaga, etc.)
I start out by asking the students to write down the letters as I spell N-O-R-M-A / J-E-A-N / B-A-K-E-R. Someone always seems to know that this was Marilyn Monroe. I ask them if they know of other famous people who have changed their names, and then I give out the cards while giving instructions.
Note: You will have to change the fonts or size of the font so that you can get 4 cards onto one page. If you can, you may want to print Cards A and B on different colored paper to make the distribution easier.
This activity is a lot of fun because the students are communicating, even with very little language.
(I learned this activity from British author Leo Jones a long time ago, but I have extensively revised it. Nearly every one of the the famous names are of my choosing.)
