TOPICS FOR CLASSROOM ORAL PRACTICE, PUBLIC SPEAKING AND DEBATE
Exercise on learning to take the floor and present ones views, structure ones thoughts and be convincing and persuasive in public or in oral examinations. Practice in outlining and defending ideas. The teacher can time the student, using a stopwatch. Students can vote by a show of hands for the most effective speaker. Good debating practice. The class can be divided into two sections, one for the motion and the other against. An orally competent chairperson can be chosen to run the show. This group activity works well, especially if the student is allocated a role and can use a "mask" without necessarily betraying his/her own thoughts, beliefs or personal positions. The whole exercise can be videotaped and re-run to coach students and give feedback and constructive criticism on their strengths and weaknesses: eye contact, relationship with the audience, gestures, body language, logical structure, linking threads, intonation, voice patterns, stress, effectiveness in getting the message across, skill in handling and fielding questions etc. A very useful and positive exercise.
