A Mother´s Day Dozen: Understanding the meaning of words from their context.
Students read the Mother´s Day quotes and then take the reading comprehension quiz on the second page. The quiz will ask them to define the meaning of certain words in the quotes by using the context of the sentences. The quiz is 12 questions long, half are multiple choice and the other half are true or false. Many ESL students struggle with unfamiliar vocabulary. The purpose of this exercise is to help them develop the skills necessary to decipher the meaning of new or unfamiliar words. By using the context of the sentences surrounding the word in question, the students learn to gain insight into the meaning of the word.
