Create a new species
STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO CREATE A NEW SPECIES OF ANIMAL AND DESCRIBE IT.
PLANNING :
Ask your students what they know about genetic engineering.Put pictures of animal who have been modified on the board. Itīs easy to find on Internet.
Ask your students: Which animal(s) on those pictures have been genetically modified ?
Tell them that the only one that is not genetically modified is the platypus.
Cows: have been modified to give more milk.
Chickens: have been modified to have bigger breast.
Mouse: has been modified to grow a human ear.
Ask your students: If you where an animal geneticist,
what would you do?
Tell your students that they will create a new species.
Tell them that they will use all the words they learned about description in the last unit.
Give page 1 :Create a new species
Explain the example and read the text.
Explain the section in orange.
Give page 2: Create your new species.
Ask some students to present their new species to the class.
Stick all pages 2 on the wall.
Start a discussion, ask them:
Do you think we should genetically modify species? Why?
Do you think we should genetically modify humans?
Why?
