Simon & Garfunkle - Richard Cory
Here is a fun exercise for Simon & Garfunkle’s song, “Richard Cory,” which is an adaptation of Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poem. Pass out strips of the lyrics, and ask the students in groups of 2s or 3s to assemble them in order to tell a story in poem form. (Don’t mention songs or music at this point.) Play some Simon & Garfunkle songs as background music. After 4 of their songs have played, play “Richard Cory,” but with very low volume. Keep replaying this song, each time a bit louder. Gradually the students will notice that they are hearing the lyrics to the song and can complete their task.
(It is sometimes surprising how long it takes students to catch on that the background music is what they are working on. Several times I have heard students reading the lyrics they were unscrambling out loud almost synchronized with the song, WITHOUT noticing the song in the background!)
Follow up with discussions about themes from the songs, such as happiness, wealth, etc.
