Strangers in the Night
Here are 2 exercises around the song, leading up to a fun role-play of 2 strangers meeting in the night.
I begin by having the students working in pairs to join together phrases from the song that are on the slips of paper. Then I play the song so they can complete the task. Next give them the worksheet with the gaps, and ask them to try to fill in the missing words from memory, eventually playing the song again so they can finish the task.
After doing the gap-fill, play the song as they walk around silently looking at the “strangers” from a set of photographs of individuals (young and old, good-looking and not), asking them to select a “stranger.” (In larger groups, each pair of students can choose 1 photograph between them.) Then have students work in groups to decide on the names, occupations, ages, interests, etc. of their “strangers.” After the preparation, a male and a female “stranger” sit face to face, and the students role-play a meeting between their 2 “strangers.” A few pairs can perform in front of the class. With elementary students, this can be slow, but is very enjoyable, as it is real communication.
