Explorer´s Circle
Basically, students will be searching a chosen text (in this case a short story) for a specific focus (again, for this activity I will be focusing on different spellings for the same sounds). This activity will help the students continue to develop their graphophonic understandings, and expand their awareness of spelling generalisation, as well as increase their vocabulary. This activity can be used with many different types of texts such as: books, charted students song and poems, magazines, brochures, web pages, modelled writing examples, or written messages.
Short description/outline
- Read the short story to the students
- Hand out copies of the story
- Reread the story, searching for the chosen focus e.g words with the /a/ sound
- Get the students to spot and write down words with this focus
- Talk about the words and ask students to place them into subgroups e.g. according to the letter pattern used to represent the /a/ sound
- Put the words found on a chart
- Challenge students to find out more words containing the /a/ sound
