Cognate Bingo!
This is a fun Bingo activity which uses cognates to build a student´s confidence in speaking the English language. I created this game as an introduction to the course because it draws upon a student´s familiarity with the language. Thus, it is a good way to get a feel for where students are. There are 20 Bingo sheets; each one is unique and has 25 squares with cognates written in French, Spanish and Italian. I have also included a checklist with space to record up to 4 games. As the teacher writes an ENGLISH word on the board and says it out loud, students follow along by finding the corresponding word on their sheet written in their native tongue. Important: When a student gets 5 squares in a row (BINGO!), he or she MUST read the words out ALOUD for the rest of the class to hear. This is a fantastic way to work on word pronunciation and phonetics, while simultaneously engaging the class in a fun and potentially rewarding activity. This game also increases students´ vocabulary. My students were absolutely thrilled to play this game. I am sure yours will be too!
