I have a pet cat: Oral communication & ordering of sentences
This activity involves group work to put sentences into a logical order. Each person has one or two sentences that they read out loud and interpret the meaning. Important to emphasize is their oral participation in reading the sentences, considering its order in the overall communication. We used this activity with a group that was initially quite resistant to communicate orally, even though their English-level was close to intermediate. The subject being a predictable, Garfield-like cat, they could impute meaning, sense the humour, and soften-up about their anxiety to pronounce words out loud in a group. There are 10 sentences in total, each with a relevant image to help convey meaning.
