Why were you late? Why were you late?

The first text can be used any way you like really. I started of with a general question (do you beleive George?), got students to retell the story and then elicited the grammar (difference between past simple and past continuous). You could use it for anything you like though - acting it out is another option with younger kids. Itīs certainly a topic that most students are familiar with! The last exercise is a chance for them to be creative using the target grammar. I hope you can use it. Enjoy
