ANIMAL FACTFILE - READING - SUMMARIZING - WRITING
This is a multi-episode activity. Students are to write and talk about their favourite animal. Prior to this, they are given this text from a fact file on LIONS (second page). They are to read and look up any difficult words. They can also be asked to translate it as homework.
Next, they have to summarise it to complete the factfile worksheet (page 1). This can be done with the whole class: ss take turns to make their contribution to the final summary.
They must know that to summarise they have to include only the most important information and rewrite it with their own words by simplifying the original text until they produce their own text on their own level.
By this time hopefully they have become familiar with animal factfiles and wildlife vocabulary. Now they must find the information on their favourite animal on the internet (good source --> http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts/) to complete a second summary following the steps above.
Finally they can use their summary for an oral presentation with the aid of a powerpoint (I made a sample one on LIONS for ss to see what I asked them to produce. You can also get it from my collection ;)
OPTIONAL: As a further exercise, they can also use the information chart on Red Kangaroos (page 3) to WRITE a text on that animal by building sentences and paragraphs according to such different aspects as diet, habitat, behaviour, reproduction and so on.
This activity covers reading, writing and speaking, and can take 3 or 4 classes. Ss can be marked for each skill. They become quite motivated when they know they can choose the animal they´ll have to talk about...
The production of their own summary and powerpoint can be very
creative but they shouldn´t waste time by looking for pics on the net to illustrate their powerpoint p. if they haven´t written their own factfile summary yet...
