I sourced this article from the Sydney Morning Herald and made a comprehension worksheet as assessment practice for the Australian Adult Migrant English Program Curriculum learning outcome ´Demonstrate understanding of a news article´. In order to meet the criterion of ´task validity´ I endeavoured to target the global and discrete reading skills identified as minimum competency requirement in such a task by the Curriculum for Spoken and Written English (CSWE). Using an authentic article addresses the Curriculum´s criteria of ´task authenticity´. Key lexis and idiomatic expressions might need to be pre-taught; I did this with edhelper-generated vocabulary worksheets.
