Getting Help in Our Town
I went to our local town hall and collected a few dozen different brochures describing a wide range of services available in or near our community. This activity poses a lot of hypothetical questions about typical problems or needs that residents might have, for which there are services available. In class, I handed out all the brochures plus the list of questions and let them fish through the materials on their own, guided only by the questions. Students were encouraged to work individually or in groups, and I encouraged them to see who could find all the answers the fastest. This worked quite well, engaging students in the activity and offering them a wealth of community knowledge at the same time.
