School Rules, Do we have to? -and- "We must~
This was a fun activity where my Japanese students practiced using "Have to" in comparing school rules of their own country (Japan) with the school rules of my country (America). Naturally, you can insert different flags, depending on where you´re teaching or what country you´re from. Furthermore, you can modify this activity to use the auxiliary "must" in place of "have to", as this activity is very flexible.
I would let the students work in pairs, and they would have to "guess" what my country´s typical school rules were. I would then reveal the answers to them at the end and let them see how they compare with Japan´s school rules.
At the end of the lesson, students will get into groups and make their "own school rules". Students had a blast doing this activity, as they would come up with some crazy school rules (Ex. "Teachers must obey students!" or "Students do not have to do homework" and so on).
