Reading Comprehension & Writing Lesson: A Football Legend
A biography of the famous footballer Eric Cantona. The lines of the text are numbered for easy reference. Includes 4 activities (T/F, deducing meaning of vocab from context, short answer) that Ss can work on in pairs. As a warmer, I ask Ss. to discuss sports heroes, then narrow the discussion to football, & then show images of Cantona, asking Ss if they know who he is. I then tell Ss to skim-read the text (5-6 minutes max) & answer the gist question: "Were Cantonaīs supporters surprised when he retired?" After confirming their global comprehension of the text, we move on to the more detail-oriented exercises. A lesson based on this could take anywhere between 60-90 minutes of class time, if you want to do all the exercises. Short answer Qs can be assigned as HW. I use this to prepare Ss for a series of lessons related to the film, "Looking for Eric." These lessons are particularly popular with teenage boys at the intermediate through advanced level.
