Newspaper Article with Comprehension and Speaking Activities (UPDATED & IMPROVED)
This is an article taken from the AP in September 2009 about a new treatment facility for internet addicts in the US. Lines are numbered for easy reference. Exercises are designed for students to practice their skim reading, scan reading, and reading-for-detail skills. The text is also useful to help Ss recognize variations in register and deduce the meaning of new words/ expressions in context. I teach this by whiting out all identifying information about the text (title & author at beginning, URL & copyright info at end). Ss are then forced to guess what type of text it is (Ex. 1). Subsequent exercises check different sub-skills as outlined above. Includes a follow-up speaking activity (role-play) that can be played in groups of 2 or 3.
