Diagram of Opinion Essay for TOEFL IBT Independent Task
As a teacher with ten years experience teaching TOEFL, I wrote this essay as an example of a decent opinion essay for the independent task on the writing section of the exam. This essay provides a model for a specific kind of opinion essay question: that which gives two options. This particular essay highlights the effective, persuasive technique in which the writer admits that there are good reasons to believe that both sides are correct; however, there are better reasons to support one side over the other.
Footnotes are provided indicating topic sentences, key words, determiners/referents, examples and effective style essential to this kind of response.
ESSAY QUESTION: (original) Some people say that the internet has made life more interesting and exciting. Others say that it has made life uninteresting and passive. Which do you believe is true? Support your opinion with reasons and examples.
