How do you see it?
It is a very original way to practise the spelling and to revise the basic vocabulary. The material for this activity are charts that resemble the charts used by the opticians during the eye consult. The letters in each line of the charts provided for this activity are put in the wrong order. All of the six charts are about animals but each chart is about a particular group of them (African animals, domestic animals, birds, animals that live in the water, small and, finally, big animals.)
The way of playing:
Divide the students into the groups of four. Each group stands at the end of the class with their backs to the board on which you will be putting the charts. Each group also chooses their spokesman (or two if the teacher thinks that then the students will feel more secure.) The spokesman can look at the board and stands at such a distance from the board from which the teacher thinks that he/she will see the letters from the charts. The task of the spokesman is to spell the letters from each line to his/her group. If he/she cannot see all the letters from the line or if he/she makes a mistake at spelling, he can come closer to the board but always according to the following criteria:
the highest line: 2 points: for each step forward one point less
the second line: 4 points: for each step forward one point less
the third line: 6 points: for each step forward one point less
the fourth line: 8 points: for each step forward one point less
the last line: 10 points: for each step forward one point less
His/Her group (at all times with their backs to the board) should write down the letters they hear and try to guess what the animal in question is. If they succeed (within the time previously determined by the teacher), they get 3 points for each correct answer.
I hope youŽll like it :-)
