Madman on a Bridge
This exercise is done in 4 phases.
1) Read the problem together as a class, and the students work individually to rank the 6 people according to their responsibility for the woman’s death.
2) The students work in small groups of 4 to 6 people comparing their answers and explaining their choices.
3) Hand out the discussion questions and have the students work individually again to choose 8 to 12 questions that they would prefer NOT to answer. Insist that they strike out/cross out the questions they are eliminating.
4) The students then work in pairs taking turns asking each other the questions that they have not eliminated. (An alternative is to have the students in each pair exchange papers before asking questions.)
I’ve been told that the story is true, having taken place in the 1960s. The first exercise is a variation of one suggested by a former colleague at the University of Nancy II in Nancy, France. The second exercise was inspired by Jean-Paul Creton, who made up a different set of questions for a different story. Allowing students to cross out questions they don’t like was suggested by John Morgan and Mario Rinvolucri in their book, "Once Upon a Time" (C.U.P.).
You may have to adjust the fonts to get everything on 1 piece of paper, which can be cut in half.
