Practice in following instructions
Make sure you keep to a strict time limit, e.g. 2 mins; this is to put them under pressure, like they will face in an exam. If anyone figures out the answer, indicate that they should sit quietly until the time is up. Then look around at a few papers - anybody who has entered any answers has not followed the instructions correctly! Tell the students to remember the exercise when they are doing an exam; hopefully it will show them how important it is to read instructions properly.
