Irish traditional songs: "The Fields of Athenry"
This worksheet lets you work with the song "The Fields of Athenry" written by Pete St. John in 1970, which refers to the historical event of the Great Famine in Ireland (1845-51). It includes the uncomplete lyric of the song with a "fill the gaps" exercise and a map of Ireland (Eire), which pictures the different Irish cities and counties. The song develops the themes of freedom, imprisonment, love and hope. Itīs an opportunity to work on vocabulary and grammar topics (present continuous, past simple, present and past perfect) and Civilization (history of Ireland).
