Tex Avery Cartoon - Symphony in Slang
This excellent cartoon by Tex Avery is a great teaching tool for upper-intermediate and advanced students because of its huge assortment of slang and idioms like being short-haned and raining cats and dogs. It is available here:

Distribute the transcript with the definitions of the vocabulary, and ask the students to read the transcript and memorize as much of the vocabulary as possible.
In the next class, show the cartoon 2 times. I then do a mock TV quiz show that I prepared with PowerPoint. (It is more than 4 times the upload limit on ESL Printables, but you can send me a personal message with your email address and I will email it to you.) I divide the class into 3 or 4 teams, which have to answer the questions. A correct answer earns their team 3 points. If their answer is wrong, anyone from another team may attempt to answer. If they get the answer right, their teams earns 2 points. If their answer is wrong, another team wins 1 point if their answer is correct. Hand out 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes (a week’s “vacation” in your town, candies, etc.) to the 3 top teams.
For homework, have the students write their names on slips of paper and collect them. Then have them draw the name of a classmate (making sure that they haven’t drawn their own) (Be sure to include YOUR name with the others! The students then have to write a 1-page fictional biography of the person whose name they have drawn, using between 12–35 of the idioms or slang expressions in their biography. (Remind them not to include anything that would hurt or embarrass their classmate! If in doubt, they should check with the subject of their biography first.) In the next class, allow the students to read each other’s biographies before collecting them. (Your students will LOVE this homework assignment!) I used the fonts Script MT Bold for the title and Garamond for the text.
