World Cup Game - Learn about other countries
Use these cards to help your students learn about other countries. There are 20 cards here, each one is based on a country that is currently participating in the 2010 World Cup. This allows me to play a game, called "English World Cup", with my students. The students are high beginners, meaning some understand everything on these cards, but most only know most of what´s there.
Pre-teach the words "language", "currency", "population", and "capital" and you´re good to go. Draw a tournament bracket on the board and label the countries. Give each student (or pair of students) a card and tell them to practice speaking the words for about 5-10 minutes. Help them with the hard ones.
Now, have the students face off against each other, and watch your students teach your class about other countries for you. You can do points any way you want to, but I did 1 point for the best speaker, and then rock paper scissors. You need two points to win. Every once in awhile there would be an upset and it was fun. You can have the students vote for best speaker, too. It works best (because of tournament design) to use 16 cards (16>8>4>2>1).
I did this lesson 10 times, and it was hard to finish in 45 minutes (including pre-teach and set up).
