You Understand More Than You Think
A video/dictation activity designed to quantifiable test listening comprehension and help build the studentīs confidence in their listening abilities. Many of my upper-intermed and advanced students still worry about catching every word while they listening, but this activity usually shows them that their brains are catching more than they think. They just have to trust that they are understanding more than they think. I do this activity, as is, near the beginning of the course to get a starting number. Then, I do it again a few weeks later with a different listening clip. You can replace the clip/transcript with an authentic news clip about something international that the student will have general knowledge about. This activity doesnīt really work with conversations. Make sure the speaker uses a moderate or fast speed and vocabulary that is not too technical. This works best as a 2 lesson activity: 1) dictation and 2) analysis.
