proof reading passage
Predicting - Whole-class work
Set the scene by asking students whether or not they remember their first day at school. Invite some students to share their experience with their classmates.
Explain that they are going to read a story called Jeff´s first love. Ask them to guess what the story might be about.
Skimming and reading for detail - Individual work
Distribute the Story worksheet. Ask them to skim the story to see if their predictions were correct. Stress that they should read quickly and not worry about words they do not understand.
Feed back from students what the story is about, then tell them that they should read the rest of the story to find out why Jeff liked Janet.
When students have finished reading, feed back their answers and also ask some questions to check their understanding of the text.
Proofreading - Individual work
Explain to the students that some words are used incorrectly in the text. Ask them to read through the story again carefully and correct the mistakes. Give a few examples to demonstrate how to do this.
Point out that they should be able to find ten mistakes. Allow around ten minutes for this activity.
Conduct a quick class check by eliciting answers from the students.
Round off the activity by stressing that when learning new vocabulary, apart from the meaning and the pronunciation, students also have to be aware of the context in which it can be used.
