For pre-readers see how many animals they can identify. Make small groups and give each group a magnifying glass and a poster, then dictate words to them. They must first find the words and then write them on the board. For new vocabulary, write the word on the board and have them find the correct picture. Now give them the word shapes puzzle to do.
