The paradox of choice- video presentation
This is an activity for advanced adult students based on a 20-minute talk available online at www.ted.com.
Barry Schwartz is a psychologist who studies the link between economics and psychology, offering startling insights into modern life. In his speech, The Paradox of Choice, he argues that the fundamental dogma of our society, the more choices we have, the more freedom we have; the more freedom we have, the happier we are, is wrong. Too many choices can in fact paralyse action and bring less satisfaction. Through vivid examples from everyday life (supermarket, electronics, communications, healthcare, identity, marriage and family, work) Dr. Schwartz argues that we need fewer choices than what we have in our modern, affluent world.
