BIRTHDAY PARTY - Speaking Activity - Character Cards for Group/Class Role Play
Fun speaking activity!! Divide your students into groups and tell them that they will be party planers for Mr Herald Johnson’s 80th birthday party. You can either give them a copy of the two sheets above or cut out the character cards and have the students play the characters themselves. Give each group a copy of the birthday table or have them draw one in their folders. To have even more fun you could get your students to sit around a table in the classroom!!
***
There are 14 seats around the birthday table; one is taken by Herald Johnson, because it’s his party. The other seats will be taken by 13 of the 16 other characters, invited by your students. There are 16 other characters so you either leave 3 out or tell the students that they have to decide who they don’t want to invite.
***
Tell them to discuss who should sit next to each other, and why or why not…
Because of everybody’s likes and dislikes some people will have more topics to discuss with each other than others. Since birthday parties are supposed to be fun, you want a seating chart that doesn’t lead to boredom or conflicts.
***
There are no right or wrong answers. Students should justify their decisions and have fun deciding about the seating arrangements.
