English worksheet: Tense Table with Formulas Tense Table with Formulas

Tenses are always daunting for language learners, especially in English, which has some tenses that many other languages donīt (e.g. Turkish doesnīt contain a Perfect tense). Kids often panic when faced with multiple possible tenses, but the goal of this worksheet is to present a straight-forward, logical formula that the kids can always rely on, thus taking away their stress and hopefully helping them to focus. I was noticing that my students often jam-pack their sentences with all kinds of auxiliary verbs and incorrect suffixes, because they just arenīt clear on how to use each tense. Each tense in the table is presented as a formula, with the necessary form of the verb (verb 1, 2, or 3) and any necessary auxiliary words. It has been used in 3 classes - a low-level, an intermediate, and an advanced. They were in 6th grade and they all responded very well to lessons centered around this table. Obviously the table provides a lot of information that your students may not need yet (how often do native English speakers even use Future Perfect? :), but the skill we were teaching the kids was how to look up the information they need while reinforcing their tense grammar. Iīd also recommend pairing this with lessons on irregular verbs, and sentence order (subject-verb-object) if your students need it. If you prefer, you can also give them the above table without the formulas, and have them write them in with you. They can then keep this table as a resource for the rest of the year, and whenever you need them to write on the board in a particular tense, they will know they can just look up the formula on the chart.
