Oral History Project
This project lets students tell and record their own stories (or that of a family member.) First, the teacher plays a clip featuring a short oral history (I´m planning to use the intro segment of the "First Day" episode of "This American Life". You can listen to and download episodes from their website or via iTunes. Another good source for personal stories is "The Moth", but they´re more adult in content.) Then, the teacher introduces the definition and how-to of oral histories (check "Creating an Oral History" handout). Then, students write their rough drafts, which are checked by the teacher, and then a final draft. When their story is ready to go, students use a computer (or recording device) to record them reading their stories. If they have access to sound editing software (for example, Sound Engine, which is free), they can add background music as well. After all is recorded, the teacher can burn them onto a CD and devote a lesson to listening to and maybe discussing or evaluating the stories.
