Unit Plan giving advice in social settings.
The group targeted in this unit consists of fifteen men and women. Their ages range from 18 to 40 years old. They all are Spanish speakers as their first language. They come from Central and South America mainly. They attend ESL classes at a Community Center for Latinos in Tacoma, WA. They meet twice a week for one hour. They have been attending this class for over six months.
Latinos tend to always give advice to other people about different social situations, whether you ask for it or not. It’s a big cultural tendency not always welcomed in the U.S., where people tend to be more private. I decided to exploit this Latino cultural trend and teach them the functional language to give advice in social settings.
