Carnivals around the world
I used this lesson with both my intermediate adult class and my bilingual 6th grade class and they both enjoyed it. For classes of a lower ability I created a powerpoint presentation that I hope to upload soon. For the speaking activity at the end I asked the one or two of the students the example questions and got them to ask each other. Then I got them to work together to create questions for me to ask about what they do in my country answer- the celebration is similar to the idea of Mardi Gras but instead we just eat pancakes, which they all found rather amusing. Then I asked them a present perfect question as an example and got them to practice asking each other present perfect questions about their experiences at carnivals e.g. Have you ever been to the carnival in Venice? After asking them to share which carnival they would most like to visit, I finished off the lesson with a debate titled "my carnival is better than yours" and split the class into 4 teams one for each part of the reading and each group had to pretend they were from their assigned country and tell us why their carnival was the best.
