First day informal assessment of studentīs language level, background, interests, and personality
This is a first day informal assessment of studentīs language level, background, interests, and personality. I give this to my students on the first day to complete at home. I do this intentionally because it allows the student to relax and think and take all the time they need to complete the task and accurately reflect their abilities. It doesnīt say "Test" on the top, but I use it to ensure that each student has indeed been correctly placed in my class. The questions determine whether the student can use structures such as the conditional, the present perfect, the past tense, the present tense, and the future tense. My second motive is to get to know each student on a fairly in-depth level on day one. Among other things, one of the questions puts them in a teacher role by having them teach me about a tradition from their country. It enables me to find out about their interests, abilities, and strengths, a wonderful memory that has brought them joy, and their goals for the future. IMPORTANTLY, as I give them the handout, I tell them that when they answer everything and turn it in to me, I will give them all MY RESPONSES to every question that they answered. So, they get to learn all about me as well! And itīs a great motivator to have them read real English content! I provide a lot of details in my written answers. This puts us on an equal platform from day one! I use this handout each time I get a new group of students.
