´Ant Tribes´ in China AND Ten Bad Habits of Chinese College Students
There are two texts in this lesson. One is about /ant tribes/ and one is about bad habits of Chinese college students. Both are adaptations from materials on the internet. I have given the original web links in the two texts. I assign these texts to the students for outside reading. In class I first take the texts from the students. Next, I pair students and ask them to retell the texts. After about ten minutes, I pair the students with new partners and ask them to ask and answer the questions. The questions are in two groups--odd and even numbered questions. This allows for reading, speaking, and listening. This worked well with my second year college English majors. After about 15 minutes, I may ask students with even numbered questions to stand on one side of the classroom and students with odd numbered questions to stand on the other side. They must then find new partners and continue with asking and answering questions. This is because students need to change partners (or feel bored) to get through all the questions. Next, I tell the students to put the question papers in their pockets and then I put the students in groups of three. Their task is to identify issues raised by the article in the form of questions "Should college students be mortgage slaves" for example. We then sit in a circle and each group of three gives one issue. Finally, I invited any questions and comments from students that other students may or may not respond to.
