Collective Nouns
Lots of practice for the students in this one. Collective nouns add eloquence to the English language. Consider these, a rouleau of coins, a coterie of orchids and a charm of goldfinches. In this worksheet, learners are exposed to a number of different collective nouns in different contexts/categories – e.g. environment, people and jobs. There are a variety of exercises for learners to engage in to cement these phrases in their brains. There is also the opportunity for them to create new collective nouns which promotes word association skills – e.g. a hug of teddy bears, an expectation of midwives and a jam of tarts. Importantly, at the end, learners are asked to define ‘collective nouns’ in order to show they have grasped the concept. These are fixed phrases so one suggested way of teaching them is to give students all the answers on a sheet (or whiteboard) to memorize and to treat this w/s as a memorization game. Includes the answers which could be adapted as a h/o for students. I hope it is beneficial!!!
