Go West! Chinese College Grads! and Young Chinese Grads Do Business
This worked well with my second year college English majors. Ask students to prepare before class; pick up the text in class at the beginning of class; pair students and give them 10 minutes to retell/ repeat the contents of the passage; pair students with a new partner and give them the questions--one person gets the odd questions and one person gets the even questions (will take 20-30 minutes); tell students to stop and put their question paper in their pocket; put students in groups of three and tell them to decide on three questions (expressed as a question, not as an opinion) that identify key issues the article raises (5 minutes); students sit in a circle and each group shares an issue in turn; and, finally, ask students for their comments and opinions about the issues the text raises. The teacher should listen and encourage and not insert their ideas. This worked very well for my class. This text, as indicated, is from CHINA DAILY. I edited the English.
