Creation stories
When I first used this, I asked my students to come in for the next session with a story from their own culture. I then told the Paul Bunyon story about the Grand Canyon and explained how whenever people saw something giant they attributed it to Paul Bunyon. I then asked them to tell me the stories from their cultures and we categorized them as fables, legends or creation myths. This was very good at generating conversation.
