Distinguishing L & R Pronunciation and Listening Activity
The biggest challenge I faced teaching English in South Korea (and I hear ESL teachers of Japanese speakers face the same issue) was getting students to appreciate the difference between /l/ and /r/ in their pronunciation. In Korean, this is because although there is a phoneme that sounds kind of like /l/ and /r/ mixed together, there are no distinct /l/ and /r/ sounds. This minimal pairs activity is divided into two parts: the first is designed to help the ELLs hear the difference between the /l/ and /r/ pairs/, and the second is designed to help the ELLs pronounce it, which is the same order that Coelho recommends (65).
