PYRAMID SCHEMES IN CHINA
I took a text from Wikipedia and short texts from the Chinese media. I edited them all and then wrote questions. The topic is ´pyramid schemes´. I became interested in this topic after several of my former students got hoodwinked into joining such schemes.
Students should read the texts outside class. In class, the students should ask and answer the questions in pairs. After students have finished with the questions, ask the students if they are familiar with anyone who has been tricked into a pyramid schemes. In my classes, from one-half to one-third of the students did know such a person--often a neighbor or relative. Then divide up students who lack such personal knowledge and ask the students who know someone to tell them about the person they know.
Finally, have students sit in a circle and offer comments about the articles, the topic, and the people they know who were tricked.
