Longfellow´s "The Cross of Snow" Worksheet
I use this worksheet to teach Henry Wordsworth Longfellow´s sonnet "The Cross of Snow" while also educating students about Petrarchan sonnets, octaves, and sestets. Initially, I give them background information on Longfellow´s relationship with his wife, and most importantly, how she died in a fire. Then we listen to a reading of the poem, and go back and clarify any confusing language. I am sure to have a copy of the worksheet projected on the whiteboard and we label the confusing terms. Then we re-read the piece and annotate on the board (students do this on their papers). You could choose to answer the questions all together as a class if this is the first time students are learning the material, or use it as a review and have them do it individually. This worksheet/lesson took a whole 48 minute period. Enjoy!
