Petrarchan (Italian) Sonnet Writing Assignment
After studying Longfellow´s sonnet "The Cross of Snow" and others, I have students write their own Petrarchan (Italian) sonnet. This assignment is a challenge, because the requirements call for students to include literary devices such as similes and metaphors, while sticking to 14 lines/ 10 syllables per line. Before students begin, I make sure to write my own sonnet following the above requirements and use it as a model for the class. This seems to work best as an in-class assignment-- students need a lot of direction but in the end they have fun. Enjoy!
