THE PROPRIETRESS: Questions about the short story by Li Yiyun
The questions in this worksheet are for Li Yiyun´s short story THE PROPRIETRESS. A Shanghai reporter goes to Mrs. Jin´s (the main character) town to interview Susu, whose husband has been recently executed. Susu has sparked interest because, before her husband´s execution, she asked the court to allow her to have a child with her husband. Li explores the life of Mrs. Jin and the characters close to her--people whom she shelters and takes care of.
Given enough incentive (quizzes, exams), students may read this story. The story´s benefit for particularly Chinese college students majoring in English is that there are no unfamiliar cultural materials.
