The Pawnshop Role play
This was a role play I did at the very end of my "Music" lesson and just before the "Copyright Wars" lesson....I gave all the students various musical instrument flashcards..and then told them how hard it is to make a living as a musician and that things didnīt work out for their band...So hocking their tools at the pawnshop was their only choice...Talked a bit about how you never get back what you spent on your instruments and then handed out the role play sheets. I gave each student some money...(Chump change, for singing a song)..Then said they had to go to the pawnshop and do their best bit of baragaining. The student who could get the most money won. They needed to come up with all kinds of reasons (i.e "I have a baby", "I am starving", etc.) why they needed to get the price they wanted for their instruments. I also had some "blue book" estimate prices on the board for each instrument as a guide for the pawnshop owners...After they sold their instrument...They would switch roles with another class memeber and we would "hock around the clock" until the class was over...It was pretty fun...at least as a role-play.
