The European Union: Stereotypes and Prejudices
Many students (or people in general) are full of stereotypes and prejudices when it comes to other countries / people. I think it’s important that students realize this fact and reflect it. From my experience, only very few students use more positive than negative adjectives and you will be surprised how deeply rooted some animosities towards other countries are. This task is also a good starting point for discussing that even if a political and economical union is achieved, it will take a much, much longer time until people and peoples feel and think “European”. It also somehow explains why up to today, people don’t feel represented by and rather detached from the Union (and therefore also resulting in low voter turnouts at elections for the European Parliament, for example). I left out some EU countries but added Croatia, Russia, Switzerland and Turkey, but you can easily add or leave out the countries you want to. The results you will get and discuss are sometimes funny and somehow sad at the same time. Note: you will need dictionaries for this task.
