Reading Comprehension: Simon
This is the fictional story of Simonīs life. It is based in London and uses British English. I used it as a test on the first day of a workshop to help determine the studentsī level. The language ranges from simple to more complex. I added the questions, which test the present, past and future tenses, but the text could be used on its own and teachers could ask their own improvised questions and test the studentīs speaking skills at the same time. It could also be used in a general conversation lesson as there some interesting themes such as life in a capital city, unemployment, family etc. I asked the students to highlight any words or sentences that they did not understand at the end so that I could pinpoint vocabulary to discuss, because I already knew roughly what their level of English was and I knew that they would understand most of the text.
