| | Bike (A Chinese boy´s father sells enough rice to buy a bike for his son)
A boy´s father carries two big bags of rice to a distant market every day to sell to pay of debts. Then he puts six bags on a cart and pulls it to market, not using the family´s water buffalo because it would make the animal too tired. In the end, the boy´s father buys his son a new red bike, which he learns to ride.
Suggestions for teacher: ask students to read the text outside class, pair the students, ask them to retell the story, repair the students, and give them the questions to ask and answer. Worked well for my first year English majors whose ability to read English far exceeds their ability to speak and understand spoken English.
