Minimal Pair Word Trees - R and L
A minimal pair word tree is used to test studentsī ability to hear all the sounds in English. Pairs of words that differ by only one sound (like mud and mug, or pat and bat) are chosen to fill the tree. A native speaker chooses one word from each pair and says it a few times so the students can circle which word they hear. At the bottom of the tree, a student who has heard every word correctly will arrive at the same number as the teacher.
Understanding the meaning of the words isnīt strictly necessary. It CAN be combined with known vocabulary to reinforce them, but since this is a listening activity it is not required.
Larger trees can be created by adding more levels to the tree.
